Barnes identifies two Liverpool players to cost Jurgen Klopp this season

Liverpool legend John Barnes believes ‘technical’ midfielders like Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho are costing Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.

The young duo have played well in periods so far this season, with Liverpool making a mixed start to their new Premier League campaign.

Klopp’s side have nine points out of a potential 18 so far having lost just 22 points in the entire 2021-22 season.

Liverpool ‘normalized mediocre performance’ and left ‘team frozen’ under Jurgen Klopp

Critics have raised their voices over the past 24 hours After Liverpool lost 4-1 to Napoli in their first Champions League group stage match.

Barnes believes the lack of vaccinating devices in Liverpool’s “engine room” is costing Klopp with Elliott and Carvalho more technically than Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner.

Barnes said BonusCodeBets: “If you look at the way we play, the midfield is our engine room. The midfield is the reason we play as well as us. The midfield is the reason why Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson attack at the same time.

“Why would they do that? It’s because we have a midfield that is working hard.

“We usually had a very strong defensive midfield lineup which meant the defenders could attack and then the midfield would complement the full back attack.

“Now we have a more technical midfield in terms of Harvey Elliott and Carvalho, which means the four defenders, they are a very good defense, but they don’t get as much protection as they used to be.”

Barnes added: “I think in the end if you look at what we’ve done in the last two or three years, we have three Fabian, three Jordan Henderson, three James Milners.

“You don’t have to be the best technical Liverpool player in midfield, you just have to work hard and defend well when everyone is attacking. You get to attack from the back and the three up front.

“If you’re going to attack with two fullbacks and three up front, you can’t leave the two fullbacks to defend, so you needed three hard-working midfielders.

“We’ve moved forward from that in terms of having creative midfield players and there’s a balance between attacking full-backs and defensive midfielders to complement that. That’s not where we want to be at the moment.

“So, yeah, we’re going through some teething issues but we’ll be fine.”

give his explanation for Poor performance in NaplesEspecially in the first half, Klopp said: “Don’t think too much after the game, you will react more.

“We have to kind of reinvent ourselves because the basic things weren’t there. It’s a tough period, no doubt about it. If you’re not playing exceptionally well, you can still defend at a really high level. We have to be able to do that.”

“The start of the game doesn’t help. If we want to defend better and concede a penalty after three minutes and the next minute you obviously can’t do exactly that. Tonight we got caught between.

“But, nevertheless, it’s the job that needs to be done. That’s what I mean. It’s not that we have to reinvent a new kind of football. You’re always trying to get better but at this moment it’s clear that everyone would be happy if we could play things similar to what We used to play it.

“Tonight was the least tight performance I’ve seen in a very long time from us… and from other teams as well. Napoli were really good but we made it easy for them because we lost the ball in areas and then the next situation was a counterattack. No, that’s not how it should be. .

“There are some things that are really clear, we have to change that, and the reason why it is like that now is also more clear. But I need time to just say the right things because at the moment it is not 100 per cent clear.”
