Christoph Freund, director of RB Salzburg, is close to agreeing personal terms with Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano.
There have been wholesale changes at Chelsea in recent months.
The Blues were taken over by a consortium led by Todd Boehle in May after Roman Abramovich put the club up for sale.
The American businessman invested more than 250 million pounds in the first-team squad in the summer transfer window.
Buhli was chairman and interim sporting director in his first summer window in London.
This is due to several high-profile exits in the boardroom as Boehly was looking to turn things around.
Director of Football Marina Granovskaya has left after an impressive stint at Stamford Bridge.
Granovskaia was named Best Club Manager in European Football in December 2021.
Goalkeeper and former club legend Petr Cech took on the role of chancellor after retiring in 2019 and also left after entering Buhli.
Bruce Buck – who has served as Blues chairman for more than 22 years – was another significant figure in the club’s history to leave the club.
The huge amount of departures means that there must be some new people to join the club.
After a hectic summer, Buhli turned his attention to appointing a new athletic director.
Christoph Freund, director of RB Salzburg, has been linked with the role, and this week has refused to exclude himself from the row.
Chelsea tied the Austrian side in the Champions League on Wednesday and the 45-year-old took on a prominent role at Stamford Bridge that night.
“You shouldn’t rule anything out in football, Chelsea is a huge club,” Freund said.
“Chelsea is a huge club in transition. I can’t say exactly what will happen in the next few weeks and months.
“But I’m the sporting director of Salzburg and I really enjoy it.”
Freund added: “I’ve traded with Chelsea from time to time.
“We talked a lot a month or two ago because they were interested in signing Cisco.
“The new owners are interested in how we do things with the young players, how we integrate them into the first team.
“But you have (those conversations) over and over with other clubs, that’s it.”
Chelsea are understood to have held talks with both Freund and Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Campos, with co-owners Bohli and Bagdad Ighbali opening to add two new managers to their recruitment team.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are close to completing the acquisition of Freund.
He wrote on Twitter: Chelsea are now ready to reach an agreement on personal terms with Christoph Freund as new manager.
“It is in talks with Salzburg to sign it soon.
Freund, the man behind the best deals like [Erling] Halland, [Sadio] mane, [Naby] keta [Dayot] Upamecano – ideas, data, talents. will work with [Graham] Potter. “
Romano later confirmed that Salzburg had been “informed” that Freund was close to reaching an agreement with Chelsea.
