Activision Blizzard pulled some pretty big guns yesterday with news about Call of Duty Modern Warfare IIThe new Call of Duty release is coming on my birthday on October 28th.
The company needed to do this, after wandering through the desert of game delays and a horrific sexual harassment lawsuit. Activision Blizzard always seems to bring bad news to the surface, even to the point that it decided to sell itself to Microsoft for $68.5 billion.
We still have to see if these weapons will shoot live, as we’ll find out how good the game will be with the multiplayer beta starting today. But based on what I’ve shown, the amount of Activision’s investment in Call of Duty is pretty staggering.
With that kind of investment, I feel Microsoft should make Call of Duty available to Sony and any other platform they want after they acquire Activision Blizzard. Activision Blizzard’s monetization strategy is set up across as many platforms as possible. I suspect Sony may have to worry About losing the exclusivity of getting Call of Duty trials a week ahead of Xbox and PC, but you might not have to worry that Microsoft will take Call of Duty away from PlayStation users in the future.

Warzone 2.0 has a large map with sub-regions that are maps from a multiplayer game. It’s as if the game’s designers talked to each other across the studios. Yesterday’s first matches of Warzone 2.0 looked absolutely stunning, right up to a cliffhanger victory for Streamer NickMercs.
All of these improvements reflect meticulous attention to detail, and may be enough to convince gamers to return to intellectual property that seemed wobbly. After Battlefield’s poor performance last year, Activision Blizzard has a chance to reclaim much of the lost ground and more.
The competition in the first-person shooter market has only increased its stakes. A Call of Duty fan called me. But I will dive into this year’s Call of Duty. And competitors may do well if they get out of the way.
