If you’ve come across vaults in Fortnite before, you’ve probably noticed that they’ve historically asked you and some friends to stand still and be screened for the good stuff inside. Well, that all changed with the introduction of keys in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, which must now be collected before vaults can be opened. The vaults are stacked with much better loot this time around, but it will take some searching on your part. Here’s how to get vault keys in Fortnite, and then of course how to use them as well.
Where to find keys in Fortnite
Fortnite keys are found as random loot, which can be good or bad. This means that you won’t need to head to specific places and fight for these much-desired keys, but it also means that there’s no surefire way to find them in any round. We found our first key as a ranch near the tree of suddenly barren reality. Anyway, whenever you find a random key, you’ll move on to the second stage: figuring out what to do with it.
Fortnite vaults and how to use the keys
Once you find a key, your map will be updated with several lock symbols around the island. These represent the locations of the vaults. You can head to any of them, but note how many keys you’ll need. One key slot lock code means you only need one keybut some vaults need more than that and are labeled as such on your map.
The number of keys you hold at any one time is listed to the right of the game UI, near your inventory. Oddly enough, at the moment, using a key seems to put it back into your inventory afterwards, which means you could, in theory, run from safe to safe and unlock several with the same key or keys. It’s unclear if this is intentional or part of a season launch bug that will be patched soon, but we’ll update as soon as we know more.
Either way, safes that need multiple keys to open have better loot than one-key safes, but even those one-key safes are full of cool stuff. We’ve found three rare chests, tons of ammo, barrels of slurp juice, and more in each that we’ve unlocked so far, so these are clearly better vaults than last season’s vaults, which tended to give a handful of rare tier loot instead of stuff. Legendary they are now distributing.
