It looks more like a spacecraft than an airplane – this massive aircraft could be the future of travel as it operates at supersonic speeds with a miniature nuclear reactor at its core.

The prototype plane is known as HSP Magnavem – a Latin word for “Big Bird” – and it’s hoped it can reach 1,150 miles per hour, meaning the flight from London to New York could take just three hours.

Boarding before a short hop across the Atlantic, you’ll find that the huge, arrowhead-like plane has two decks – with business and first class on the upper deck and “super economy” class on the lower deck.

It is hoped that up to 500 people will comfortably sit on board the giant plane – which is heavier than today’s largest passenger planes, the Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380.

And those upstairs can contain “every imaginable luxuries” such as private suites and spas.

First class passengers will also have an out of this world view with skylights above their seats that can be either dimmer to shade or brighter to allow full visibility.

The 70-meter-long, 590,000-kilogram aircraft will power its four massive engines located across the rear of the fuselage from a miniature fusion reactor buried under the passenger decks.

The electrical energy will then rush through the plane’s batteries and send the plane into the sky, reaching altitudes of 15,400 metres.

And then its jets of light will start – sending it flying at supersonic speed.

The massive plane will also have AI-assisted pilots equipped with laser guidance systems that help the crew monitor the engines and steer the vehicle.

With a flying wing-type design – the iconic aircraft will also be fitted with solar panels, which increases fuel savings for the aircraft as its battery is charged while in flight.

The Magnavem will be slightly slower than the legendary Concorde which can reach speeds of 1,353 mph as it transports people in luxury across the Atlantic from Europe to America.

But it is hoped that the idea of ​​the plane will solve the problems that eventually ended dreams of supersonic travel when the joint British and French aircraft retired in 2003.

Concorde was killed off by noise, cost, and small passenger capacity – the luxury jet was priced as air travel became more and more affordable.

With quieter engines, more passenger capacity and hopefully cheaper tickets – designer Oscar Vinales hopes Magnavem will return the world to the golden age of supersonic travel.

He explained that he wanted aircraft as ambitious as his concept to herald a “new era” in the skies – with faster, cheaper and greener planes.

Oscar, from Spain, told The Sun Online: “It can have two decks with a capacity of 500 passengers, a ‘Super Tourist’ class with a modular system that can accommodate between 280 to 360 seats with a large ‘personal space’ in between. First class and first class 140-seater business class, with fantastic sky views and all imaginable luxuries, such as private suites, bathrooms, spa and virtual reality.”

He explained that his futuristic concept is based on reality – being a mixture of modern aircraft and upcoming theoretical technologies.

He hopes the design will make for a more efficient aircraft around the world, which could theoretically mean cheaper airfares.

“As the main source of energy, HSP ‘Magnavem’ will be fitted with a compact fusion reactor (CFR-portable) and hydrogen fuel.

The aircraft can be equipped with four large-scale hybrid hydrogen-electric engines and two Ramjet engines.

However, no one has yet committed to building and testing one of the Oscar monster machines.

“Due to the fact that almost all of the technologies of this concept are very innovative, only institutions such as universities and aviation professionals were interested,” he explained.

However, he is hopeful that as these technologies develop, his designs will be picked up and one day in heaven.

Oscar initially became interested in aircraft as a hobby – working mainly as a designer in high-performance cars and motorsports.

He said, “I became interested in flying, after a bad experience during a trip that happily ended only with great fear.

“My interest in learning more about aircraft and all their aspects of a ‘hobby’ has become more serious and with a view to trying to ‘improve’ future commercial aircraft, designing concepts based on my personal studies of them and how it would be possible to obtain a practical design.
