A frustrated Son Heung-min was happy to respond to his downfall with a great hat trick to help Tottenham Leicester 6-2 . Hammer.
Last season’s top scorer in the Premier League had started the season without goals from his first eight games in all competitions and saw his name among the visiting substitutes for the struggling Foxes.
After watching Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Rodrigo Bentancur net in the first 47 minutes, Son had a chance to play and responded with two superb goals before completing a late hat-trick when the VAR ruled he was at the back.
“It was a great performance and I was really disappointed as well,” he told Sky Sports.
“The way I play I can do a lot better than I was. I was disappointed, the team was doing really well, but I was disappointed with my performance.
“I had a bad ending this season. I was also a bit lucky with an own goal, two offside goals and hitting the crossbar. I knew the goals were coming and I wasn’t worried.
“I’m really happy that the ball finally got in! I was pretty sure I was in a good position in this hat-trick. I’m glad I was able to help the team, that’s really important and I can go on to national duty with renewed energy.
“I feel emotional to be honest. There was amazing support and I always felt like I disappointed my teammates and fans with my performance. They were always so supportive.”
Conte had hinted during his pre-match press conference that Son could be left out, saying he and Kane would be “rotated” at some point.
The Italian was happy to see it pay off after Son came home in the 73rd minute from outside the area to finish off the drought in style.
But it’d be better if she’d come with a superb left-footed shot that made it 5-2 before the hat-trick was confirmed – albeit after a VAR check – with four minutes to go when Son fired past Danny Ward.
“In the next 12 games, we rotate and we rotate the way I think the moment is right,” Conte explained.
“Every decision I make is always an honest one because I want to win, trying to put my players in the best physical condition to give the best performance for the team.
“Seeing Sonny with the ball after the hat-trick and then the MVP award was definitely amazing. It was amazing for me, for my teammates because we needed this.
“We, not only, needed this. I am happy but I repeat that this is not a problem. If we solve the problem in this way, surely we will have to repeat the situation in the next match with all the players.
“I think in the future, all the players ask me ‘Please, please put me on the bench’ and then they come and score three goals, but of course I’m joking.”
Leicester scored five goals at Brighton two weeks ago, but manager Brendan Rodgers insists he remains confident of turning around his disastrous start to the new season.
He added, “It is a challenge that I will enjoy as I have never practiced this spell before in my career. It is definitely something I want to continue with.”
“There is no doubt that in the first seven games we had a difficult start. We had Tottenham away, Arsenal away, Chelsea away. Manchester United at home and a couple of other games we have to win.
“Maybe this is the time for us to reset everything and break the summer cycle as well.
“The owners, they will do what they feel they need to do. I’m not silly. I know football.
“The last six games, the loss, it’s not a good read, but I have full confidence that the team can move on and if they play like they did in big chunks, stop making mistakes, then they can climb the table.”
