Rangers move against Napoli to Wednesday with UEFA matches expected to start this week | football news

Rangers’ Champions League group stage match at home to Napoli was postponed 24 hours to Wednesday after discussions between Police Scotland, Glasgow FC and UEFA.

UEFA has announced that the match at Ibrox, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 14 at 8pm.

“This is due to severe restrictions on police resources and regulatory issues related to the current events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” a statement from UEFA explained.

The UEFA Youth League match between the two teams that was originally scheduled for Tuesday has also been moved to 2pm on Wednesday.

UEFA also announced that there will be no away fans at Ibrox this week and, in sporting fairness, Rangers fans will not be given permission for the return leg in Naples on October 26.

Fans are strongly advised to avoid making travel arrangements and to respect this exceptional situation.

Rangers began their campaign in Group A of the Champions League after losing 4-0 to Ajax Amsterdam, and Napoli crushed Liverpool 4-1 at home.

All UEFA competition matches are expected to continue as planned next week over the course of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

All Premier League and English Football League matches this weekend have been postponed as a sign of respect.

All matches in the Women’s Premier League, Women’s Championship and FA Women’s Cup have also been postponed.

The Scottish Football Association has announced that all professional matches have been postponed over the weekend, while all football matches in Northern Ireland and Wales have also been suspended.

The English Football League is set to resume on Tuesday with a full program midweek while confirmed matches from the National League continue as scheduled on Monday.

Sporting CP advances against Tottenham despite technical error

Tottenham have moved to make clear that their Champions League group stage match against Sporting CP this week in Lisbon will go ahead as scheduled (Tuesday 13 September, kick-off 5.45pm).

Doubts were raised about the tie after a technical glitch on the club’s website indicated that the match had been postponed.

Both Tottenham and Sporting won their opening Group D matches against Marseille and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.

Richarlison scored two goals with a late header to defeat Tottenham in the 10-man Marseille goal in the return of the Champions League to north London.

Sporting won 3-0 at its host Frankfurt, as English striker Marcus Edwards broke the tie midway through the second half before former Wolverhampton winger Francesco Trincao and Nuno Santos got three points.
