Capcom confirmed that the next Shadows of Rose DLC The Winters family saga will conclude, and that has already put fans in the series speculating about what that means for Resident Evil 9.
Directed by Kento Kinoshita IGN Japan (Opens in a new tab) that the studio is “making the Shadows of Rose story to end the Winters family saga.” Producer Masachika Kawata jokes that Capcom is “absolutely not involved” with any of its plans for future Resident Evil games at this time.
If you haven’t guessed it already, here’s your warning Spoilers for Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village will follow.
The Winters family is introduced in Resident Evil 7, where you play Ethan Winters, to rescue his wife Mia from the clutches of the Baker family. Resident Evil Village picks up a few years later, as mysterious mother Miranda kidnaps the couple’s daughter, Rose. Ethan dies at the end of Village, and he asks the Resident Evil main series Chris Redfield to take care of Rose.
Over the course of these two games it is revealed that both Ethan and Mia have become mutants by the time Rose conceived, and that Rose herself is a human superhero made up of a mysterious mold fungus. Resident Evil Village ends with a post-credits scene showing Rose as a teen, and the upcoming Shadows of Rose DLC showcases her fight inside the mold’s consciousness.
The leaks suggested that Village was the middle chapter of the trilogy that will end in Resident Evil 9, but these comments from Capcom suggest anything is possible for the next entry in the series. Could we see a new storyline depicting Rose ditching the baggage of the “Family Winters saga” to explore something new? How about returning to the old series? Or could it be an entirely new cast and story?
Society’s assumptions about what this means are ubiquitous, but they are very broadly positive. “This is great news,” says Redditor. Harvey Bird Low (Opens in a new tab). “Ethan was great at 7 and 8, but let’s go back to Jill finally.”
“Thank Christ!!! I want my main characters front, back and center. Claire, Jill, Leon, I’m looking at you!” Adds *checks notes* D62500d (Opens in a new tab).
“Personally, I wouldn’t have jumped in excitement yet (not what I would have done in the first place since I love Ethan and his story),” johnnyscardigan (Opens in a new tab) Says. “This is certainly not a confirmation that OG 4 will be front and center again. There is also a possibility that RE9 may introduce an entirely new champion instead.”
“Honestly, I’m glad, as much as I loved RE7, RE8, and Ethan’s story,” Worm_Scavenger (Opens in a new tab) Says. “I was really worried about them using it or using Rose again in 9 when I want to see more new characters.”
Perhaps the best summary of feelings is Adrien Gibroni (Opens in a new tab)who says, “This got me even more excited at the same time for Rose DLC and RE9.”
