Riot Games may look to tap into the gacha game market by expanding R&D in China

Riot Games, developer league of legends, Valorant, and other popular titles recently announced that it will invest in its development studio in China to expand its research and development (R&D) division. As such, the company plans to develop gaming titles that could last decades into the future.

Riot expanding its list of titles isn’t uncommon, but given that it’s based in China, there’s a growing feeling that the company might be looking to try its hand at gacha games. The Chinese market is dominated by popular games that fall into the gacha category, such as Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy.

So, it wouldn’t be surprising if Riot Games It was decided to jump into this area and expand its wings in order to reach more players and expand its scope. This expansion will make a lot of sense as it will help boost the company’s income many times over.

Besides, the previously mentioned gacha games titles are also very popular all over the world, with Genshin Impact being a phenomenon. Thus, Riot Games will have plenty of room to go global with these titles as well, should they feel the need.

Riot Games may be looking to develop titles that can directly rival the likes of Genshin Impact

Riot Games began expanding into China last year itself. Since then, many people have been involved in the development of the company’s current titles, such as Valorant, League of Legends, and Teamfight Tactics.

However, the fact that it is expanding its R&D department in China has raised many eyebrows. This is because the president of Riot Games clearly stated in the presentation that the company will be building new games.

He also stated that the new addresses will be developed with long-term service in mind. This could mean either MMORPGs like Final Fantasy and Black Desert Online, or gacha games like Genshin Impact and fantasy tower.

As it happens, Riot Games is already developing an MMORPG that is handled only by leading World of Warcraft systems designer Greg Street. Therefore, gacha games are the only option left when it comes to new game titles that can span decades.

For Riot Games Shanghai’s first anniversary, the studio will be upgraded to Riot China R&D Group. Riot will set up local studios in China to support research and development of existing and new games, with a primary focus on mobile games.mp.weixin.qq.com/s/WfRxSjn9MmsO…

A new esports title would also not make sense given that both League of Legends and Valorant are quite well established, and the company wouldn’t want to start competing internally. However, this is not the only reason to believe that the company may be diving into gacha games.

The Chinese market is primarily home to all forms of gacha games, and the two main names in this genre are Jinshin effect The fantasy tower.

HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact is clearly the most popular gacha game, with no major competitors. So if a famous company like Riot Games decides to dive into gacha games, it is expected that it will become a contender for this title.

There is also a possibility that the battle royale game is not very different from PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, better known as PUBG. Mark Merrill, president of Riot Games, mentioned the development of several titles, which obviously keep the doors wide open for gacha.
