Shane Lowry beats McIlroy and Ram with a bullet at Wentworth – Irish Times

Rory McIlroy on Sky: Shane and I have become incredibly close after the past few years. Shane had a good year without a win. I feel like he’s playing the most consistent golf of his career. I think he’s getting better as a player, he’s becoming a more versatile player. I see him at home, I see him when he plays. It’s worth it, he’s been knocking on the door. I think we’ll both be moving tonight, so maybe we’ll have some drinks! “

Shane Laurie on Sky: “It means a lot. It’s been a good year, but I felt like I’ve been close to it a few times, I only have a few championships left this season and I really wanted to win one, this one was at the top of the list.

“I really like it here, I’ve argued in the past. The bad shots I’ve had over the years in competition are starting to creep into my head, it’s amazing what this game does. I’m so happy. I can’t describe in words how much I love this tour, how much I love this tournament. I am the happiest man in the world right now.”

Birdie for Laurie! Lowry put down the hill tracks at the hole but stopped short. He clicks it to birds! Moves to the fore. Only an eagle from McIlroy can catch it.

Rory’s layer softened a little and did not rotate. His shot fades to the right and that’s a missed opportunity on 17.. Meanwhile, LIV golfer Talor Gooch copies the last hole to get to -15, and a lot of important world ranking points are there.

Great drive from Lowry on the 18th as he cuts the corner on the right. Couldn’t put it better, at first it seemed cramped to the trees. All play for him.

Lowry’s stroke slides to the right. There is no bird in the seventeenth. One hole left now, you need a birdie to avoid a playoff with John Ram. McIlroy is behind the trees but has firewood. 302 from the pin. He’s looking for the hero’s shot… nail it and approach the green zone. Great shot, still a tricky step to get it up and down for a birdie.

McIlroy pushes his way straight at 17, disappointing. Looks like he could be throwing him in, too. Lowry’s perforated wedge leaves a chance for the birds but, frustrated, he would have liked to have been closer to the left.

Big push from Lowry off the tee on the XVII. Avoid trouble left but it makes the hole more difficult. Here is Rory in the fifteenth.

Lowry leaves his shot a little short at 16, work to do to save his counterpart. Not what you want at this point in the tournament. But it makes parity safely. Two par 5s left. At least one bird is required. Maybe two with Rory chasing. McIlroy’s approach to 16 is good. Again he is not fully satisfied but 15 feet for the bird.

It looks increasingly likely that you’ll be an Irish winner at Wentworth today. Rory or Shane? Or will Ram’s result make it a playoff?

Byrdie to McDreamy! Look back, here comes Rory. Big shot to break from the edge of the green right in the middle of the hole at 15. Moves within one shot of progress. Lowry’s approach to the sixteenth isn’t great. On the sidelines, I left a long blow.

Laurie puts his birdie throw into the hole for another easy draw at 15. Picking up holes until the final charge with two 5s to finish. He appears to be in control of the championship, unless McIlroy can ignite the last holes. On the 15th, McIlroy was a little further away, on the edge of the green, but still a reasonable birdie attempt. He needs to get one upstream, somewhere, for a chance to beat Lowry. Laurie smiles perfectly as he hits a stinger on the 16th day of the tee.

Another lovely Laurie’s iron on the 14th, just above the pin, is 20 feet. It seems controlling. McIlroy’s approach from raw at 13 is past the green, and he will need to go up and down to keep the momentum of the round going.

The BMW Championship at Wentworth has entered the final stage, with two Irish players, Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy, competing.

Shane Lowry has been swinging great all round at a 5-under day and 15-under championship. He ranks second on his page, shots behind by Jon Ram. In third place are Patrick Reed, who finished the match after 63 today, and Victor Hovland, who played seven holes.

A three-stroke bogey in eighth proved costly to McElroy as he is now fourth and would be disappointed with a lackluster front nine on benign scoring day. He is in a tie for sixth place.
